Ignite Creativity, Fuel Discovery, and Enrich Lives through Glass and Glassmaking The Museum of Glass in Tacoma furthers the careers of artists through hot shop glassmaking, providing community programs, and hosting exhibitions like that of Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight Show. Executive Director, Deborah Lenk, will introduce us to the amazing facility and what it provides for the community and region. Preston Singletary is a Seattle artist who is descended from a Tlinglit Clan, one of several native American tribes whose home is the Pacific Northwest Coast, which extends from southern Alaska to Oregon. Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight, the unique solo traveling exhibition by Preston Singletary and organized by the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA., tells the Tlingit origin story of Raven and his transformation of the world - bringing light to people via the stars, moon, and sun. Raven leads visitors on a fantastical journey through the transformation of darkness into light. The show will be on tour at The National Museum of the American Indian - Smithsonian from January 2022-2023.

Welcome Back to your Seattle! We will meet at 5:30 pm outside the WAC and proceed on a 30 - 40 minute walk guided by Paul Nunn of Urban ArtWorks. Walk at your own pace as we are guided through the banners brightening downtown city streets. The Seattle #4 Arts Committee produced “Welcome Back to Your Seattle”, a banner project to revitalize downtown, invest in BIPOC artists, and encourage families and businesses affected by the pandemic. The banners brighten the downtown core from James to Denny and 1st to 9th Avenues, and encourage a return downtown. All the banners were designed by artists of color, who were paid for their work. The local non-profit, Urban ArtsWorks selected the artists, and local firm SuperGraphics produced the banners, permitted them with the City of Seattle, and hung them this fall. We will meet back at the WAC for no-host beverages and bites (optional). Look forward to seeing you there.

Once teeming with bountiful salmon and fertile plains, Seattle’s Duwamish River drew both Native peoples and settlers to its shores over centuries for trading, transport, and sustenance. Unfortunately, the very utility of the river was its undoing, as decades of dumping led to the river being declared a Superfund cleanup site. Much of Washington’s history has been told through the perspective of its colonizers, obscuring and mythologizing the changes to these lands that have long been occupied by Native peoples. Through the story of the river, author BJ Cummings explores previously unrecorded Native and immigrant histories, and exposes settler falsehoods about the founding of the state. The river’s story is a call to action to align future decisions with values of collaboration, respect, and justice.
BJ Cummings (she/her) founded the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition and manages community engagement for the University of Washington’s Superfund Research Program. She is the author of The River That Made Seattle: A Natural and Human History of the Duwamish, and she was awarded the River Network’s national River Hero award for her work leading community-based clean-up and restoration of the Duwamish River. Cummings lives in Seattle.

Breaking Industry Boundaries to Create a Completely New Category of Second Home OwnershipAustin Allison, co-founder and CEO of Pacaso, a service that helps people buy and own second homes, has broken records and changed the second home real estate industry through passion, innovation, and technology. To help make the dream of second home ownership possible for more people, Austin created an entirely new category of second home buying through co-ownership. Austin will be sharing his entrepreneurial journey, from his real estate start in Ohio to the launch and eventual sale of his last startup dotloop, to the incredible growth Pacaso has seen over the last year. Austin launched Pacaso in October 2020 and by March 2021, he had successfully raised $90M over the course of two rounds of funding and became the fastest U.S. company to reach Unicorn designation (less than 6 months). Now, over a year later, the company is valued at $1.5 billion with total funding at $217 million. |

Hear how the airline is guided by their values like “Do the Right Thing” and “Be Kind-hearted” as they navigate the pandemic, and why they are optimistic about the recovery ahead. |

Bridging Differences for Better MentoringLisa Fain, CEO, and founder of the Center for Mentoring Excellence will guide mentors and mentees to bridge gaps between and among cultures - a growing issue in today's diverse workplace Lisa Fain, CEO, and founder of the Center for Mentoring Excellence will guide mentors and mentees to bridge gaps between and among cultures - a growing issue in today's diverse workplace. Mentors and mentees may come from very different backgrounds and have a limited understanding of each other's cultures and outlooks. But mentoring remains the most powerful tool for creating meaningful relationships, furthering professional development, and increasing engagement and retention. Younger workers and emerging leaders, in particular, are demanding it.

It’s Time To Rethink SchoolFor more than four decades, our public schools have failed to adequately educate more than half of our children. Now, with the pandemic, the problem is even worse. Many of our children have lost at least a year of school and their social development has also suffered. Though we have fully funded our schools, during this time, supplemented with an enormous one-time grant from the Federal Government, there has been no fundamental change in how our schools operate and, therefore, we should not expect any change in the outcome. Our failing education system is still a failing education system, only more expensive. Nothing will change, improve, or get fixed if we keep school as it has always been. It’s time to rethink school. |

Growing a Revolution and What Your Food AteThe brewing soil health revolution cuts through standard debates about conventional and organic farming. On both industrialized and developing farms, improving soil health through the adoption of three transformational farming practices—ditching the plow or minimizing soil disturbance, planting cover crops, and growing diverse crop rotations—offers a profitable way to rebuild the fertility of the soil and thereby reduce dependence on fossil fuels and agrochemicals. Combining ancient wisdom with modern science, these regenerative practices can be good for farmers and the environment, translating into farms that use less water, generate less pollution, lower carbon emissions, and stash carbon underground. It can also produce more nutrient-dense food to better support human health. What’s good for the land is good for us too. |

The mission of the Peacebuilder Committee is to encourage and empower all members of our communities to exercise mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation; and to advocate both globally and locally for peace and the non-violent resolution of conflict. Prospective projects include anti-bullying programs for at-risk youth, planting Peace Poles at prominent public installations, and outreach to facilitate greater dialogue and collaboration between law enforcement and ethnically diverse, urban neighborhoods.
Please contact Mike Hatzenbeler for information on how to attend.

The need for blood donors is far bigger than BWNW could handle on any one day. This is why the entire month of May is available for Rotarians, friends, family and co-workers to donate blood at BWNW. Please call BWNW at 1-800-398-7888 or go online to www.bloodworksnw.org to schedule your donation. Finally, email your photos to stencrissey@gmail.com so we can track our success. Even if you do not take a photo, please let Sten know you donated. |

The Community Service Committee promotes community service and creates projects for club members to respond to community needs, particularly for youth, education, and the homeless. They typically embark on projects right here in Seattle, where they can “get our hands dirty” and create a direct connection with the community.

Working to Close the Achievement Gap in EducationThe Education Committee has been focused on closing the achievement gap for students of color and low income for many years. The committee's focus has traditionally had two components – one focused on early learners and literacy and the other on supporting young leaders and their pursuit of higher education. This program will showcase the impact of our work with the United Negro College Fund, our partner, in reaching promising young students who seek additional education after high school. Our 3-year partnership with the United Negro College Fund has transformed the Winners for Life program. This meeting will highlight students who receive support from your SRSF contributions and are recognized at the UNCF Gala each year. In a panel discussion format, students who have received scholarships from Rotary funding will share their perspectives about how the keystone UNCF college application preparatory program, Portfolio Project, has supported them in their development and leadership. In this time of heightened awareness of the systemic inequities in our society and educational systems, you will not want to miss hearing about how your contributions help transform young lives and contribute to closing the achievement gap in education. |
