Kate Riley is the editorial page editor of The Seattle Times. She works with The Times editorial board to develop the opinion page’s positions on issues. She joined The Times’ editorial page in 2002 as a writer and columnist. A graduate of Redmond High School and the University of Washington, she returned to the Seattle area after spending 17 years working at Eastern Washington newspapers where she was a reporter, editorial writer and editorial page editor. She started her career as a farm writer for the Times-owned Walla Walla Union-Bulletin (Think Walla Walla Sweet Onions and the wine industry.)

Dr. Borjesson joined Washington State University as the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in July 2020 after more than a decade at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, where she established herself as a respected pioneer and leader in the field of veterinary medicine.

She served in various leadership roles at UC-Davis, including as chair of the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology; director of the Clinical Regenerative Medicine Laboratory; and inaugural director of the Veterinary Institute for Regenerative Cures. She specialized in adult-derived stem cell research and spent her last 12 years at UC-Davis examining how stem cells alter the immune system.

A board-certified veterinary clinical pathologist, Dr. Borjesson has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. She holds two patents in mesenchymal stem cells and immunomodulation, and some of her recent research has focused on naturally occurring inflammatory bowel disease in dogs, chronic gingivostomatitis in cats and spinal cord injury in dogs. She received the Zoetis Research Excellence award in 2014 for the exceptional quality and productivity of her research efforts in regenerative medicine with an emphasis on utilizing mesenchymal stem cells as a therapeutic option for both orthopedic injury (such as bone and tendon damage) and in immunomodulation.

While her new role as dean means she is no longer in the classroom, Dr. Borjesson has always taken pride and enjoyment in helping to train and motivate the next generation of leaders and innovators in veterinary medicine. Since her first instructor role in 1996, she has taught, mentored, or interacted with hundreds of graduate, undergraduate and professional DVM students.

• All new volunteers must complete an application. Volunteers returning to Wellspring do not need to complete the application again. Returning volunteers do need to RSVP.
• Day of clothing: Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, most tasks require lots of standing, walking, and sorting. Please dress for the weather.
• Day of tasks: Volunteers will be supporting the Family Store by sorting through clothing, toys, books, and more, or packing orders to go directly to families experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Day of tasks will vary based on greatest need at the time.

• Parking: At our facility at 1900 Rainier Ave S. Seattle, WA 98144. Please park in visitor spots. Parking is available onsite, with additional parking available across the street, in the lower lot of the Japanese Presbyterian Church (Wellspring is the green X in the photo below, additional parking is the yellow X). Street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood. We do recommend carpooling when possible. Please do not leave valuables in cars – while we haven’t had problems with this yet, we are hoping to keep it that way.

• Donations: Volunteers are welcome to bring donations with them. For used items, please reference our donation guidelines. Our greatest needs are new socks and underwear. We are grateful for cash gifts to support the most critical needs across all programs.

Erik Nordstrom is the chief executive officer of Nordstrom, Inc. (JWN), a leading fashion retailer dedicated to helping customers feel good and look their best. He is a fourth-generation member of the Nordstrom family. Under Erik’s leadership, the business has grown from $5.1M to more than $15B and has increased its number of stores from 115 to more than 350. Erik has also driven critical investments in new capabilities to blend the digital and physical experiences, bringing Nordstrom closer to customers and serving them how, where and when they want to shop.

Prior to becoming CEO, Erik held various positions within Nordstrom. Starting in the stockroom at the downtown Seattle Nordstrom store in 1976, becoming a shoe salesperson in 1979, later moving into buying and regional management positions and leadership roles overseeing all areas of the business, Erik’s career has spanned every aspect of the retail business.

Jay Inslee is a fifth-generation Washingtonian who has lived and worked on both sides of the state. He grew up in the Seattle area where his father, Frank, was a high school teacher and coach. His mother, Adele, worked as a sales clerk at Sears & Roebuck. Jay worked his way through college and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in economics before earning his law degree at Willamette University. He and his wife, Trudi, then moved to Selah, a small town near Yakima where they raised their three sons. Jay worked as an attorney and prosecutor.

Jay and Trudi are now proud grandparents to six active little Inslees. Besides writing and illustrating books for his grandchildren and sketching scenes from around Washington, Jay is an avid cyclist and charter member of Hoopaholics, a youth basketball academy.

Jay first became involved in public service in 1985 when he and Trudi helped lead the effort to build a new public high school in Selah. Motivated to fight against proposed funding cuts for rural schools, Jay went on to represent the 14th Legislative District in the state House of Representatives. He was then elected to Congress in 1992. The Inslees later moved back to Kitsap County where Jay was elected to Congress in 1998, serving until 2012 when he was elected governor.

He is currently the longest serving governor in the United States.

Sue Rahr began her 43-year law enforcement career as a deputy with the King County Sheriff’s Office in 1979 and worked her way up through the ranks until she was elected Sheriff in 2005. She served as Sheriff for another seven years, retiring in 2012. She was responsible for over 1,000 employees, a $150 million budget, and contract police services in 12 cities and transit policing for the Seattle/Puget Sound region. She led KCSO to CALEA National Accreditation in 2010 and was awarded “2010 Elected Official of the Year” by the Municipal League.

In 2012 she was appointed Executive Director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission where she served for nine years and was responsible for training all city and county law enforcement and corrections officers in the state, as well as many other criminal justice professionals.

She is the current interim Seattle Police Chief.

All club members are invited to this progress presentation on the first six months of implementing Seattle Rotary's "Future VIsion" strategic plan. Members of the Future Vision Implmentation team will be sharing their change initiatives for club membership, club finances and operations, club meetings, the club's public image, club service projects, SRSF, and club governance. This is an important year of transition for our club. Stay up-to-date on what's happening and what's planned for the second half of the year.  Immediately following this club assembly, Rotarians will be greeted by the museum director and have time to enjoy the Frye Museum exhibits and socialize. Light refreshments will be served.

Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., serves as the President & CEO of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the largest private funder of mental health research grants. Dr. Borenstein developed the Emmy-nominated public television program “Healthy Minds,” and serves as host and executive producer of the series. The program, broadcast nationwide, is available online, and focuses on topics in psychiatry in order to educate the public, reduce stigma and offer a message of hope. Dr. Borenstein served as Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatric News, the newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association from 2012 - 2023.

Dr. Borenstein is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and serves as the Chair of the Section of Psychiatry at the Academy. He also has served as the President of the New York State Psychiatric Association. Dr. Borenstein earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard and his medical degree at New York University.

Jeffery Robinson is the executive director of The Who We Are Project. Until April 2021, Robinson was an ACLU deputy legal director and the director of the ACLU Trone Center for Justice and Equality, which houses the organization's work on criminal justice, racial justice, and reform issues. Since graduating from Harvard Law School in 1981, Jeff has three decades of experience working on these issues.

For seven years, he represented indigent clients in state court at The Defender Association and then in federal court at the Federal Public Defender’s Office, both in Seattle. In 1988, Jeff began a 27-year private practice at the Seattle firm of Schroeter, Goldmark & Bender, where he represented a broad range of clients in local, state, and federal courts on charges ranging from shoplifting to securities fraud and first degree murder. He has tried over 200 criminal cases to verdict and has tried more than a dozen civil cases representing plaintiffs suing corporate and government entities. Jeff was one of the original members of the John Adams Project and worked on the behalf of one of five men held at Guantanamo Bay charged with carrying out the 9/11 attacks.

In addition to being a nationally recognized trial attorney, Jeff is also a respected teacher of trial advocacy. He is a faculty member of the National Criminal Defense College in Macon, Georgia, and has lectured on trial skills all over the United States. He has also spoken nationally to diverse audiences on the role of race in the criminal justice system. He is past president of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a life member and past member of the board of directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Jeff is also an elected fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
