Sue Rahr began her 43-year law enforcement career as a deputy with the King County Sheriff’s Office in 1979 and worked her way up through the ranks until she was elected Sheriff in 2005. She served as Sheriff for another seven years, retiring in 2012. She was responsible for over 1,000 employees, a $150 million budget, and contract police services in 12 cities and transit policing for the Seattle/Puget Sound region. She led KCSO to CALEA National Accreditation in 2010 and was awarded “2010 Elected Official of the Year” by the Municipal League.

In 2012 she was appointed Executive Director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission where she served for nine years and was responsible for training all city and county law enforcement and corrections officers in the state, as well as many other criminal justice professionals.

She is the current interim Seattle Police Chief.

We are excited to announce the 2024 Hunger Strike fundraiser to combat food insecurity in our community that benefits Harvest Against Hunger and other local hunger relief efforts. This year’s event will take place on November 11 at several local bowling alleys. 

We encourage Seattle 4 members to join us in the fun, whether bowling, fundraising, or spreading the word. Even if you're not a bowler, you're welcome to simply come and cheer on your fellow club members. 

You can start your own team and invite friends or join one of our existing teams - it's up to you!

Together, we can help provide fresh, nutritious food to those in need and support sustainable practices that empower communities.

All club members are invited to this progress presentation on the first six months of implementing Seattle Rotary's "Future VIsion" strategic plan beginning at 5:30PM. Members of the Future Vision Implmentation team will be sharing their change initiatives for club membership, club finances and operations, club meetings, the club's public image, club service projects, SRSF, and club governance. This is an important year of transition for our club. Stay up-to-date on what's happening and what's planned for the second half of the year.  Members are welcome to arrive early for a complimnetary tour of the Frye Museum collection from 5PM-5:30PM. This event is free to club members.  Light refreshments will be served; a no-host bar for beer and wine will be available. Please register today!

Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., serves as the President & CEO of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, the largest private funder of mental health research grants. Dr. Borenstein developed the Emmy-nominated public television program “Healthy Minds,” and serves as host and executive producer of the series. The program, broadcast nationwide, is available online, and focuses on topics in psychiatry in order to educate the public, reduce stigma and offer a message of hope. Dr. Borenstein served as Editor-in-Chief of Psychiatric News, the newspaper of the American Psychiatric Association from 2012 - 2023.

Dr. Borenstein is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and serves as the Chair of the Section of Psychiatry at the Academy. He also has served as the President of the New York State Psychiatric Association. Dr. Borenstein earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard and his medical degree at New York University.

• All new volunteers must complete an application. Volunteers returning to Wellspring do not need to complete the application again. Returning volunteers do need to RSVP.
• Day of clothing: Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, most tasks require lots of standing, walking, and sorting. Please dress for the weather.
• Day of tasks: Volunteers will be supporting the Family Store by sorting through clothing, toys, books, and more, or packing orders to go directly to families experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness. Day of tasks will vary based on greatest need at the time.

• Parking: At our facility at 1900 Rainier Ave S. Seattle, WA 98144. Please park in visitor spots. Parking is available onsite, with additional parking available across the street, in the lower lot of the Japanese Presbyterian Church (Wellspring is the green X in the photo below, additional parking is the yellow X). Street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood. We do recommend carpooling when possible. Please do not leave valuables in cars – while we haven’t had problems with this yet, we are hoping to keep it that way.

• Donations: Volunteers are welcome to bring donations with them. For used items, please reference our donation guidelines. Our greatest needs are new socks and underwear. We are grateful for cash gifts to support the most critical needs across all programs.

Volunteers will support the Family Store program extension, providing holiday gifts for children facing homelessness and hardship. Tasks will include sorting incoming gifts, or packing orders to go directly to families. It will include light lifting and walking. Day of tasks will vary based on our greatest needs.

We will need a list of all volunteers we should expect by December 10^th.

As always, returning volunteers will not need to complete the application again. New volunteers will need to complete the volunteer application: https://wellspringfs.org/volunteer-form/.

Additionally, we would be so grateful if Rotary or members participated in our holiday gift drive! Let me know your thoughts.

It is my pleasure to also share the Gift Drive Toolkit and additional ways to engage below. If you have any questions, please reach out anytime.

1. Share the Gift Drive toolkit and gift wish lists: This webpage is a one-stop shop for everything gift drive! Please share the flyer at your local coffee shop, host a drive with your sports team or at your office, and activate your network for this critical effort.  
2. Bring a new and unwrapped gift: Help us ensure every child we serve has something special this holiday season. We welcome toys, books, and gifts for children of all ages, with babies, toddlers, and teens being the highest needs. You can ship deliver your gift to Wellspring from November 1 – December 6. The online wish lists and print flyer linked on the drive webpage are a great starting point for gift ideas.
3. Spread the Word on Social Media: Please share our gift drive on your social platforms! The more visibility we create, the more support we can gather to make this year truly magical. Keep an eye out for posts from Wellspring throughout the season, or craft your own.
4. Volunteer: If you would like to volunteer yourself, or with a group to support the gift drive, just reach out to me. This is a cheerful and easy way to reconnect with the Wellspring mission.
5. Cash donation: A cash donation during Giving Together supports Wellspring programs year-round. Share the donation page to raise critical funds this holiday season

Change is Brewing December 10: At Reuben’s Brews in Ballard! This annual fundraiser will feature photos with Santa and a lot of cheer. Reuben’s will donate $1 to Wellspring for each pint sold, and we will have lots of fun spin-the-wheel prizes.

Chief Scoggins has more than 30 years of experience in the fire service. He started his firefighting career as a member of the United States Air Force where he served as a firefighter. In 1989, Scoggins joined the Glendale Fire Department where he advanced through the ranks serving as Firefighter, Engineer, Captain, and Battalion Chief and in 2008 being named as Fire Chief. Scoggins has a Master’s degree in Public Administration received from Cal State University Long Beach and a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Cal State University Los Angeles. He also has an Associate of Science degree in Fire Technology from Glendale Community College. In April 2015, Scoggins became the Chief of the Seattle Fire Department.

Christina Owen is the Director of University of Washington Botanic Gardens overseeing the programming and plant collections at the Washington Park Arboretum and the Center for Urban Horticulture. She has a PhD in evolutionary genetics of flowering plants from the University of Washington. Prior to joining the Botanic Gardens, she spent 11 years as a Senior Program Officer in Agricultural Development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She will share the exciting changes coming to the Botanic Gardens organization and the future of Seattle’s arboretum and botanic gardens.
