On behalf of Seattle Rotary #4’s Environmental Sustainability Committee and NatureBridge, I’d like to invite you to the Rotary Elwha Exploration Day on November 6, 2022. Since removal of two major dams the Elwha was completed in 2014, the Elwha ecosystem has undergone radical changes and made huge strides toward restoring the Elwha’s legendary salmon runs and many other ecological functions. During Elwha Exploration Day, you’ll be led by NatureBridge’s environmental educators to explore in detail the changes that have occurred in the River since the dams came down. The day will begin with registration, coffee, banana bread, and a classroom session at the NatureBridge campus on Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park, then continue with exploration of the Elwha River itself. The event is free but registration is required and donations to NatureBridge are strongly encouraged. Sign-up and additional information on the Elwha Exploration Day is available here. NatureBridge is holding registrations open for Rotary only for the next week, then will open to the general public. More information about NatureBridge and its mission of science-based environmental education in the nation’s National Parks is available here. The National Park Service’s page on the history of the Elwha and ecological restoration is available here. Space is limited so please do not delay in signing up. We hope to see you there. |

Rotarian and Japanese General Consul Hisao Inagaki would like to invite all Rotarians to this disaster preparedness seminar. The threat of destructive earthquakes and tsunamis that have historically hit the Washington coastline are a major concern. While the risk of land liquefaction and damage to critical infrastructure such as power lines and underground utilities during an earthquake in the Seattle area is known, recent studies suggests that the Seattle Fault can also generate a tsunami with the same level of destruction as could be experienced on the coast. This seminar will introduce technology from Japan’s experience preparing for and recovering from destructive earthquakes and tsunamis that could occur in Washington State and share recent research into disaster preparedness. |

Building Pathways to Inclusion As a business leader, it’s rare to go a day without hearing or talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. George Floyd’s murder reignited the DEI movement, and companies across the country immediately ramped up their DEI efforts. Yet, there is one ‘d’ often left out of these discussions: disability.
According to the CDC, 61 million Americans - about 26 percent of our population - have some type of disability. Yet, because these individuals may require accommodations, they are often marginalized.
Seattle-based nonprofit PROVAIL believes every one of us has the right to pursue the life we choose to live, and has spent 80 years fighting the stigma around disabilities. As one of the state’s largest multi-service agencies, PROVAIL supports people with disabilities to fulfill their life choices through its three program areas: Employment Services, Home & Lifestyle, and Mobility & Communication.

Five Reasons Why Women Are Great Leaders
When women become leaders, they provide a different set of skills and imaginative perspectives. More importantly, female leaders bring structural and cultural differences to the table, which drive effective solutions. This creative standpoint and unique sense of awareness will also allow them to study and uncover the finer details that may go unmissed by others. Studies have shown that companies with higher gender diversity in leadership roles boast a higher EBITDA by over 3.5% as well as superior stock performance. Join us to hear more with Andrea Heuston’s presentation, 5 Reasons Why Women Make Outstanding Leaders.

We Heart Seattle is a non profit that comes alongside homeless encampments to clear trash. This is a harm reduction strategy for the people living there and also a beautification strategy for our parks and greenways. Along the way, We Heart Seattle offers people living outdoors referral services to housing and drug rehabilitation services. Rest assured that if the homeless encampment we are working near is inhabited, We Heart Seattle will get permission from the residents before we clean. It's not uncommon for the residents to come out and clean with us. This Litter Pick will take place near Eastlake, under Interstate 5. The actual address is: 214 East Galer. But the easiest meet up point is the corner of East Galer and Franklin Ave East. Look for us there at 10am. We’ll be wearing high visibility vests, so you cannot miss us. Wear sturdy hiking boots and layers for the weather. We Heart Seattle will supply gloves, PPE, picking tools, bags and other cleaning supplies.
This service project is appropriate for volunteers aged 13 years and older. To learn more about We Heart Seattle go to: www.weheartseattle.org
