From Boat-building to Marine Biology: Preparing High School Students for Seattle's Maritime Industry

Our own Maritime High School is showing young students how to work with their hands and their minds to learn, problem-solve, and build a brighter future for the generations to come. As a project-based learning program, students are experiencing oceanography, marine sciences, boat building and operation, and much more through hands-on projects, and learning from those experiences. Tremain Holloway is the Principal and leader of the new High School. In partnership with the Northwest Maritime Center, Port of Seattle, the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, and Highline Public Schools, Maritime High School, with Tremain Holloway at the helm, is leading the way to build positive changes through powerful experiences.

Join us for our club's Annual Economic Update with member John Adams.  John is a Certified Investment Management Analyst and leads The Arbor Group, a team at UBS Financial Services that specializes in providing multi-strategy asset management to foundations, endowments, and individuals. His group provides socially and environmentally screened, global investment portfolios for clients.  John will inform us where the economy is today and what we can expect in the year ahead.

Documentary Film Night

Join fellow District 5030 Rotarians for a viewing of this groundbreaking documentary.  In the film Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America  Robinson asks all of us to examine who we are, where we came from, and who we want to be. The film includes Jeffery Robinson's talk on the history of U.S. anti-Black racism interwoven with archival footage, interviews, and Robinson's story, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it.  This is a must-see.

The Who We Are Project was founded by Jeffery Robinson, former ACLU Deputy Legal Director. Stay after the film as Jeffery will be present after the credits for a Q&A Session.

Impact on Student Learning and Businesses Owned by People of Color

Rotary Mentors guide student teams during their consulting process and provide professional expertise and industry-specific knowledge while coaching and mentoring small business owners to help them implement the work of student teams. This session will showcase the impact this program has on students learning new skills and career advancement. It will include a speaker panel discussion with an alum of the UW Foster School, a small business owner, and a Rotary Business Mentor.

The Consulting & Business Development Center links students, faculty, and staff from the Foster School of Business with a racially and ethnically diverse business and nonprofit community to expand students' knowledge and skills, help small businesses grow, create and retain jobs, open educational opportunities for underrepresented minority students, and stimulate innovative economic development research. The Rotary Business Mentors committee, under the co-chairmanship of Bill Marshall and Terry VanNostrand, provides Seattle 4 members with an opportunity to coach UW Foster School of Business students as they help businesses in underserved communities to plan for and execute growth strategies.

Harvest Against Hunger – a program of District 5030 will host its annual major fundraising event, Hearts & Wine, from 6:30 pm on Friday, February 25th.
The event will be online using the engaging and fun REMO platform, so you’ll have the opportunity to visit with friends and fellow club members throughout the event. We’ll also have the “world premiere” of a new video highlighting HAH and our partners during the event.
Proceeds from the live auction and raise the paddle will be used to support HAH’s expanded programs that connect healthy produce from local farmers with hunger relief efforts. The New Washington State Office of Equity: Bridging Opportunity Gaps and Reducing Disparities in Our Communities

Dr. Karen A. Johnson, goes by Dr. J, and is the inaugural director for the newly created Washington State Office of Equity, established by the legislature and signed into law in April 2020.  The office will work with agencies to increase access to equitable opportunities in order to bridge opportunity gaps and reduce disparities. “Karen brings extensive experience working to transform local and state government systems to more equitably serve Washingtonians,” Gov. Jay Inslee said. “She has oriented her entire career around helping disadvantaged communities and instituting lasting systemic and institutional change for generations to come. I have every confidence that she will be an excellent, effective director. I am looking forward to working with her collaboratively to ensure that our state is one that supports all Washingtonians. The Office of Equity is an exciting opportunity to reframe how state government works.”   Join us to learn how Dr. J and her office will work with communities to develop the state’s five-year equity plan.

Dr. J holds holds both a PhD and Master of Public Administration from Old Dominion University, and earned her bachelor of science from Utica College of Syracuse University. She has also earned a Certified Diversity Executive certification.

Title: Viets for Afghans - Our Accidental Journey Into Allyship and Advocacy for Afghan Refugees 

Viets for Afghans co-founders Uyen Nguyen and Thanh Tan will discuss the whirlwind few months they've had forming a Vietnamese-led coalition to help Afghan refugees. Nguyen fled Vietnam by boat as a child. Tan is the daughter of refugees who escaped three years after the Vietnam War ended. Moved to action by Washington's legacy of welcoming refugees, they'll share stories of allyship and advocacy for Afghan refugees - and practical ways that anyone can become a humanitarian at this critical time.

Women Blazing Trails in Rotary

It was a watershed moment in 1987 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Since then, Rotary has benefited from an inclusion of diverse voices and experiences that sharpened Rotary’s reach and impact in communities throughout the world.

Incoming President, Beth Knox, will lead a discussion with Seattle 4’s second woman President, Dorothy Bullitt, past Bellevue Rotary president and incoming Seattle 4 Assistant Governor, Rachele Bouchand, and International District Rotarian, Vijya Patel. This power-packed panel will share stories of being on the leading edge of change, leaning into growth and opportunity, and leaving a positive impact in Rotary and their communities.

Lisa Fain, CEO, and founder of the Center for Mentoring Excellence will guide mentors and mentees to bridge gaps between and among cultures - a growing issue in today's diverse workplace. Mentors and mentees may come from very different backgrounds and have a limited understanding of each other's cultures and outlooks. But mentoring remains the most powerful tool for creating meaningful relationships, furthering professional development, and increasing engagement and retention. Younger workers and emerging leaders, in particular, are demanding it.

It’s Time To Rethink School

For more than four decades, our public schools have failed to adequately educate more than half of our children.   Now, with the pandemic, the problem is even worse.  Many of our children have lost at least a year of school and their social development has also suffered.  Though we have fully funded our schools, during this time, supplemented with an enormous one-time grant from the Federal Government, there has been no fundamental change in how our schools operate and, therefore, we should not expect any change in the outcome.   Our failing education system is still a failing education system, only more expensive. Nothing will change, improve, or get fixed if we keep school as it has always been.  It’s time to rethink school.

Join CHOOSE 180 for a short program, tour, and reception to celebrate their new renovation which Seattle 4 Rotary members helped with last July.  Register HERE.

The space is dedicated to the CHOOSE 180 founder, Doug Wheeler Jr. It’s now known as the Doug Wheeler Jr. Collaboratory and serves as a gathering place for the team and community members. This is a great chance to see what the finished space looks like, learn more about CHOOSE 180, and spend time together again in the space we helped to shape. 

This event and CHOOSE 180 spaces are currently mask-optional in accordance with the most up-to-date local and state guidelines.  We are also mindful of people's varying comfort levels with masking and social distancing and encourage asking when interacting with others.  This policy is subject to change if local or state mandates change.

Can Democracy Survive the Loss of Our Local Free Press System?

Frank Blethen is publisher of The Seattle Times/seattletimes.com, the second-largest newspaper on the West Coast and the most-visited digital information source in the state.  The Seattle Times is known for its strong local coverage and in-depth investigative reporting. The Times has won 11 Pulitzer Prizes – most recently, the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and has been a Pulitzer finalist 14 other times since 1982.

The Seattle Times is one of the last independent and locally owned newspapers in the United States, in its 125th year of public-service journalism and Blethen family stewardship.  Frank is a member of the fourth family generation. Currently, there are nine members of the family’s fourth and fifth generations active in The Seattle Times management and governance.

Frank is a strong advocate for preserving the local free press system and active in pursuing public policy. He remains steadfast in his commitment to independent journalism and family-owned businesses and is a longtime participant in the national grassroots movement opposing newspaper and media ownership consolidation. Frank is also a longtime passionate advocate for high-quality public education for all school children, across income and racial barriers.

Improve the Duwamish Riverbank

The Rotary District 5030 Environmental Sustainability Committee and the Environmental Rotary Club of Puget Sound are proud to offer a volunteer opportunity to improve the land near the Duwamish River.  We will work with the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition to remove invasive species from the riverbed and plant native trees and shrubs in its place. 

Lunch will be provided to volunteers and James Rasmussen of the Duwamish Tribe will join us over lunch.  

After a long cold winter, it will be fun to be outside with other people improving a  beautiful and historic river in the Puget Sound.  We are hoping for 50 volunteers from all Rotary Clubs in the region.  We will keep a waitlist in case there are cancellations.  Please sign up so we can make this community service project a success.

Growing a Revolution and What Your Food Ate

The brewing soil health revolution cuts through standard debates about conventional and organic farming.  On both industrialized and developing farms, improving soil health through the adoption of three transformational farming practices—ditching the plow or minimizing soil disturbance, planting cover crops, and growing diverse crop rotations—offers a profitable way to rebuild the fertility of the soil and thereby reduce dependence on fossil fuels and agrochemicals.  Combining ancient wisdom with modern science, these regenerative practices can be good for farmers and the environment, translating into farms that use less water, generate less pollution, lower carbon emissions, and stash carbon underground.  It can also produce more nutrient-dense food to better support human health.  What’s good for the land is good for us too.

Trish Millines Dziko cofounded the Technology Access Foundation (TAF) in 1996 after spending 17 years in the tech industry. Through Trish’s leadership, TAF transitioned from out of school programs to become a statewide leader in public education, co-managing two public schools (TAF@Saghalie in Federal Way and Washington Middle School in Seattle), partnering with public schools to transform them to promote the highest level of student learning, and increasing the number and retention of teachers and leaders of color in Washington State.  Trish is a committed, proactive leader serving on boards of organizations that focus on children, community, and education.

Working to Close the Achievement Gap in Education

The Education Committee has been focused on closing the achievement gap for students of color and low income for many years. The committee's focus has traditionally had two components – one focused on early learners and literacy and the other on supporting young leaders and their pursuit of higher education. This program will showcase the impact of our work with the United Negro College Fund, our partner, in reaching promising young students who seek additional education after high school.

Our 3-year partnership with the United Negro College Fund has transformed the Winners for Life program. This meeting will highlight students who receive support from your SRSF contributions and are recognized at the UNCF Gala each year. In a panel discussion format, students who have received scholarships from Rotary funding will share their perspectives about how the keystone UNCF college application preparatory program, Portfolio Project, has supported them in their development and leadership. In this time of heightened awareness of the systemic inequities in our society and educational systems, you will not want to miss hearing about how your contributions help transform young lives and contribute to closing the achievement gap in education.

Ann Davison is the first female City Attorney and first mom to hold the highest legal office in Seattle City government. Her career in public service began more than 30 years ago when she worked as a caseworker in the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the past three decades, Ann has been a champion for those without a voice or power. Prior to becoming City Attorney, Ann worked in private practice. Since 2005, Ann has focused on areas including civil litigation, immigration, sports, contracts, business transactions,  employment, and intellectual property. Ann graduated with a B.A. from Baylor and holds a JD from Willamette University College of Law.

The Downtown Seattle Association and several downtown Seattle organizations are pleased to announce a three-day series of block parties and concerts across five Seattle locations this spring! Our Club member and current Rainier Club President, Lisa Mayfield, invites us to a rare treat of northwest history through the eyes of the famous Rainier Club member and photographer, Edward Curtis. Following our lunch meeting, we are welcome to visit the special exhibition of 30 photogravures, recently restored to their original glory and being seen for the first time by many in the Rainier Club gallery. Curtis’ first trip to Alaska in 1904 and other magical views of life in those days will be on display.

Gender Equality: Catalyzing Transformative Change and Empowering Hope-Filled Future

Data and experience prove it is possible to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage in less than a generation. 

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. However, this goal will remain unreachable if centuries-old forms of gender-based violence, such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage persist, and girls in Kenya and around the world are prevented from creating hope-filled futures of their own design.

World Vision’s Kenya Big Dream addresses the root causes of FGM: extreme poverty, illiteracy, and cultural norms. The Kenya Big Dream ensures access to education and provides life skills training for girls, economic empowerment for families removing the financial incentive of the bride price for their girl, and changes social norms harmful to girls and boys.  Realized hope for a better future is an unstoppable force.

The Peacebuilders Committee is hosting a special Zoom forum on June 2 at 12:30 PM: Critical Race Theory: Exploring the Truth.

Edwin Lindo (JD), Associate Teaching Professor of the UW Department of Family Medicine and Assistant Dean for Social & Health Justice, will present and lead the forum. Lindo has developed curriculum and teaches Critical Race Theory (CRT) as an internationally-recognized speaker and thinker on the topic.

In addition to his CRT research and scholarship, Lindo has a podcast, The Praxis Podcast, focused on addressing racism within medicine and Estelita's Library, a social justice library and bookstore established with his wife Estell to bring education on topics of truth and justice to communities.

Beneath the ground of Lake View Cemetery lies some of Seattle’s richest history. As Seattle’s most famous cemetery, many prominent Seattle pioneers lie within its grounds, including the Dennys, Maynards, Mercers, Yeslers, and Chief Seattle’s daughter, Princess Angeline. Join us as we walk the cemetery learning about their stories and discussing their involvement in the founding and establishment of Seattle.

In addition to Seattle’s pioneer history, we learn the sordid history of Seattle’s Madam Damnable and what became of her body, honor Japanese American veterans with a visit to the Nisei War Memorial Monument, and puzzle over the cenotaph commemorating Captain Jefferson Davis Howell, brother-in-law of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Our tour will end at the graves of Lake View Cemetery’s most famous residents, Bruce and Brandon Lee, where we will discover what became of the funeral home which prepared Bruce Lee’s body for burial.

Kate is passionate about creating publicly engaging and highly sustainable architecture. By integrating emerging technologies in design, fabrication, and analysis with thoughtful attention to how environments influence human experience and interaction, Kate brings a broad understanding and creative insight to projects of all sizes and complexity. Kate will be speaking about her work with the Washington State Convention Center and other local area projects.

At the Family Resource Fair, Wellspring will be hosting families experiencing homelessness and housing instability from around the County at the Rotary Support Center for Families. We will be providing summer clothing, diapers and wipes, toys, books, and other supplies from our Family Store, signing children up for the Early Learning Center, offering housing resources, providing vaccinations and other services through the Odessa Brown Clinic’s mobile store, serving lunch, and offering games and other activities for children. We need volunteers to help with all those activities!

Vaccinations and masks are both required for participation. Note that this event will replace the standing volunteer work party for Wellspring in June.

Join us for an inside look at the work Australian Rotarians have been doing to eliminate malaria in the Western Pacific Rim.  Their story of remarkable successes in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia and East Timor exemplifies the effectiveness of sustained Rotarian service above self.  In addition, Rotarians Dai Mason and Tony Springer will tempt us with the attractions of the 2023 Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, Australia. 

Australian Rotarians have been active in fighting Malaria in their neighbouring countries since the 1990s. In 2019 the Global Fund and Rotary Australia World Community Service – Rotarians Against Malaria formed a partnership to raise US$12 million for Malaria elimination in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Timor Leste.  The campaign branding is “Finish-the-Fight”.  Dai and Tony will bring that campaign to life for us with their presentation.

In 2018 the First World Congress on Malaria was held in Melbourne over a 5-day intensive program. In order to highlight the cause for Malaria elimination, Dai conceived the idea that a 2-day Congress on Malaria, just prior to the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne 2023, was essential. This will allow Rotarians and Non-Rotarians to be informed on the latest programs for the elimination of Malaria. Tony will bring us up to date with the programming of that event as well as the delights offered by the Melbourne R.I. Convention.

Trish won the Pacific Eight Collegiate Singles Championship in 1972 while at the University of Washington.  She is the only tennis player, male or female, at the University of Washington who has ever won this prestigious title. Trish was co-captain of the Junior Wightman Cup team with Ann Lebedeff during her collegiate years.  During this time she won the U.S.T.A. National Amateur Grass Court Doubles Championships 1972 and the U.S.T.A. National Amateur Clay Court Doubles Championships 1972. 

Trish so dominated women’s collegiate tennis in the Pacific Northwest that she sought greater competition and equality for women’s athletics by challenging the University of Washington to allow her to compete on the men’s tennis team and to create equal programs for women’s tennis.  She was a pioneer for women’s collegiate sports and helped in changing the University’s support for women’s tennis and other sports.

Trish will be presenting on the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, the work that has been done, and the work that still needs to be done to bring gender equity to collegiate sports.

Seattle is the economic engine of the region and beyond. Following the Great Recession, we led in recovery time and economic vitality. That’s what we can do when we come together in partnership to ensure the region is a great place to live, work and enjoy. Challenge Seattle has engaged and continues to engage in partnerships to address COVID, homelessness, housing affordability, climate and more. Make no mistake, we are in very challenging times but if we join the public, private and philanthropic sectors together, there’s not much we can’t accomplish. We need hope in our communities and that is best done through partnerships. Let's talk about it.
