Rotary in Action: Youth, Learning, and Community Through the Arts
For this evening, the entire theatre will be open exclusively for Rotarians, family members, and guests. There will be light snacks, drinks, and plenty of time to connect.Taproot actors will give the performances that they do at local schools to promote anti bullying and facilitate a discussion with us. Everyone is encouraged to attend, bring potential new members and guests, and ensure your fellow club members are aware.Come curious—and expect the unexpected.Tickets are $20 per person and space is limited!
President Jan opened the meeting with a rousing rendition the 1953 Dean Martin signature song, “That’s Amore” performed by Jimmy Collins, Linda Rough, Michael Harris, Don Murphy, and Eric Laschever. Nancy Cahill delivered the day’s inspiration about the value/credibility of past newscasters and how they inspired learning, and healthy discourse.
President Jan introduced the day’s featured speaker, Eduardo Penalver, as legal scholar who has served as the 22nd president of Seattle University – the first lay (non-Jesuit) president and its first president of Latin descent. He was recently named the 49th president of Georgetown University, a well-known Catholic Jesuit institution. He served as dean of Cornell Law School from 2014–2021.
“We are living through a period of unprecedented political polarization,” he began, “with conservative and progressive points of view at odds since the mid-1990s.” Polarization “downstream” impacts dialogue with a no compromise perspective that poses a threat by turning adversaries into enemies.
Political polarization has people living along political lines who are less likely to encounter people who disagree – assigning them as abstractions and not human beings. “Pernicious polarization is a complex web of shifting alliances that result in politicalization of everything.” Conservatives and progressives now view themselves not just as political opponents, but as existential threats.

How Your Investment in SRSF and TRF Multiplies to Benefit the Community and the World-Clean Water in Cameroon
This fall a Rotary Club of Seattle-led project brought clean water to the Mokindi District of Limbe, Cameroon, an area overwhelmed by refugees fleeing civil strife in the country. 3000 residents, including more than 1800 children in three schools are benefitting through improved hygiene, better health and improved productivity. A borehole was dug connected to a water tower with a 20,000-liter capacity with water distributed to three conveniently located stand taps across the area. Your Seattle Rotary Service Foundation's seed investment of $10,000 made a $39,122 project possible. Five local Rotary clubs made grants totaling $11,500; the District 5030 match added $6,000; the Seattle Limbe Sister City Association contributed $11,000; the Limbe Rotary led the project on the ground and contributed the remaining funds.

People open to pathways out of sexual exploitation get referred here, often by police officers who find them on N Aurora or tent encampments. Rotary Boys and Girls Club Annual Clean Up Day
Our club established what is now known as the Rotary Boys and Girls Club in the basement of Plymouth Church 1944. The club grew so popular they moved to their own standalone building in 1954, a building funded by member donation dollars and used to this day.
Each year we return in service for an annual clean-up day, tackling tasks such as landscape improvements, kitchen clean outs, painting, and organizing. There is a role for everyone; we hope you “save the date” and join us!
In an effort to better inform membership of the health of the club, we will start posting member additions and resignations after each month's club board meeting. January membership changes approved by the board are as follows:

Music4Life is a non-profit and project of Rotary District 5030 that distributes musical instruments to public school students in need.
