Gordon McHenry, President and CEO of United Way of King County, will share reflections on the twin pandemics of Coronavirus and Racism. What we are observing, learning, and how together we can plan for an equitable economic recovery.
A few interesting takeaways from this week's presentation:
According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) in 2018 Black males accounted for 34% of the total male prison population, white males 29%, and Hispanic males 24%. White females comprised 47% of the prison population in comparison to Black females who accounted for 18% of the female population.
Our speaker also referenced the top four reasons for incarceration, by gender, based on research by Dr. Emily Salisbury:
Women
Unhealthy relationships
Chemical dependency
Socio-economic issues
Anxious-depressive disorder
Men
Previous criminal record
Anti-social friends
Anti-social environment
Anti-social behavior
Takeaways From the Happy Hour with Howard Behar
Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's happy hour featuring a conversation with Howard Behar.
During his remarks, Howard shared the personal mission statement that he's kept pinned to his desk for years, and recommended that everyone create a similar document for themselves. Following the event, he kindly sent a copy of that document for us to share with our members.

For $30, You Can Bring Hope to a Homeless Person with an Art Kit
As health and wellness practices evolve there is increased understanding that the arts offer promise to reducing anxiety and social isolation, processing trauma and stigma, and relieving feelings of depression and suicidal ideation. An art kit can help transform the life of a low-to-no income adult recovering from homelessness, substance use disorder, health challenges, and other trauma by harnessing the power of creative engagement as a bridge to community and a path to stability. Please consider clicking on the link below and donating $30 for an art kit for someone experiencing the trauma of homelessness. We are partnering with Path with Art to distribute these to local shelters in downtown Seattle.
This is part of our club’s efforts as we get closer to winter to help individuals in Seattle who are experiencing homelessness. Our foundation recently supported the Downtown Seattle Association’s Outreach Team with a $35,000 to help provide case management, mental health services, housing, and job placement as well as street-based outreach services for those in need. Working with the First 5 Collaboration of Rotary clubs, we also distributed 1,000 hygiene kits to the Salvation Army’s new state-of-the-art shelter in SODO. And, a team of Seattle 4 members helped put together beds and performed other tasks needed to get the facility ready for its opening this week.
Thank you to all our members for your support in giving hope to those experiencing housing insecurity.
