Rotary Business Mentors Program Showcase: 25 Years of Partnership with the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business

February 26th at Noon
The Motif Seattle,
Emerald Ballroom, 3rd Floor, 1415 5th Avenue

The University of Washington’s Foster School of Business Consulting & Business Development Center links students with a racially and ethnically diverse business and nonprofit community to expand their knowledge and skills, help small businesses grow, open educational opportunities for under-represented minority students, and stimulate innovative economic development research.

This year the Consulting & Business Development Center is celebrating 25 years of partnering with the Rotary Club of Seattle.  This partnership has helped create more than $200 million of new revenues and 200,000 new jobs in underserved communities.  Join us for this special showcase of the Rotary Business Mentors program and learn how we are helping advance student careers and creating jobs where they’re needed the most.  Students from the program will be in attendance to share their experience and mingle with members.

PARKING:

The Motif Parking garage entrance is located on 5th Avenue between Pike and Union. If that garage is full, other nearby options include the WAC garage on 6th Avenue, or the City Centre building garage on Union St. between 5th and 6th

Navy at Home Here, On Watch in the World

President-elect Jeff Borek kicked off the meeting with a rousing Star-Spangled Banner led by Don Murphy accompanied by Mike O’Brien, a fitting opening for our main speaker, Rear Admiral Scott Gray, Commander of Navy Region Northwest.

Rabbi Daniel Weiner prayed for the “welfare of those who secure our freedoms upon the sea” in an eloquent opening inspiration emphasizing a tale from his Jewish tradition.  “When a boat is named and launched, everyone rejoices and is happy.  But there is even more joy when a ship, having weathered the storms and sailed past all the sea’s dangers, comes safely back to port.”

Jimmy Collins, who currently serves as the civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army in Washington State, introduced Rear Admiral Scott Gray who outlined the challenges of new international threats, a budget that does not cover all the demands, and the need for our community to know more about the Navy operations in the Northwest.

Meet New Member Carolyn Ladd

I’m delighted to present our new member Carolyn Ladd. Thanks to Linda Walton her seconder and John Bridge.  I knew when I met Carolyn that I wanted her to be a Rotarian. Her amazing career includes 20 years as an executive-level attorney for the Boeing Company. So, with my recruiter hat on, I asked her if she knew about Rotary. She said she had been to many Rotary meetings in Oregon when she was Miss Oregon. My recruiting got easier from there!
