Adventures Among Wild Chimpanzees: Lessons Learned from Our Closest Relatives and Understanding the Roots of Human Behavior
November 6th at Noon
Hyatt Olive 8, 1635 8th Avenue
Dr. John Crocker is a local family physician, author and speaker who will share lessons learned from his time studying chimpanzees with Jane Goodall in Tanzania. An advocate for the environment and for better understanding of emotional well-being, he speaks and writes about the importance of protecting all living things and his own experience as a physician in understanding why anxiety, depression, and even ADD have remained in our human genetic make-up.
He combines his work alongside Dr. Goodall with his 35 years of experience as a family doctor in the Pacific Northwest in his book, Following Fifi. In addition to appearing on King 5 and writing for the Huffington Post, Dr. Crocker’s work has been featured on the Jane Goodall Institute’s news site.
Dr. Crocker was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and attended Stanford University where he met Jane Goodall. He received his MD from Case Western School of Medicine in Cleveland. He has two sons who occasionally help validate the closeness of chimpanzee and human behavior.
Tom Burt works on a new frontier. He is Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President for Customer Security and Trust. He has been there in various leadership capacities for 24 years and now leads an interdisciplinary team across the company to advance cybersecurity. Burt spoke at our pre-Halloween meeting. He highlighted how technology empowers our lives but also has a dark side. It brings risks on many levels. From phishing threats to identity theft to disturbing democracies, our digital universe touches every fabric of our lives.
I am always amazed at people who continually reinvent themselves as they experience and move through life. Our newest Rotarian is just that type of individual. Jonny Holz joins us today under the classification of Food and Beverage.
As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world. Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.
Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world. One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF). The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
This is a special meeting for those who have read So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo. Many who attended the Peacebuilders first dynamic discussion led by Paula Houston asked for more time to read the book.
Past President Cathy Gibson traveled to Shanghai this month to present Shanghai Rotary Club President Terri Lau with a certificate noting Seattle #4’s gift to Rotary Peace Centers in honor of the RC Shanghai Centennial. Seattle Rotary sponsored the Shanghai Club's founding as the first Rotary Club in China 100 years ago.
