Education Committee Event Raises Awareness in Illiteracy Fight

130+ club members, district Rotarians, and others came to this week's Illiteracy Shouts Out for Action event at the Seattle Public Library Main Branch, hosted by our club's very own Education committee. In addition to an appreviated screening of the upcoming documentary Sentenced, attendees had the opportunity to hear from a panel of area educational leaders, including club member David Woodward. Thanks to the Education committee, especially members Lori Walker and Dr. Tatyana Tsyrlina-Spady, and the other club members that assisted in making this event a smashing success! Rotary History with Past President Neil McReynolds

Past President Neil McReyonds (1991-1992) has been sharing stories about the impact of our club locally and historically with me recently. We hope to feature some of these club member stories at an evening event soon! In the meantime, here is the story of the Rotary Club of Seattle's involvement in helping KCTS secure a new building, timely as the organization has just moved from their home of 40 years:

In 1983, KCTS-TV Channel 9, had outgrown its crowded quarters on the University of Washington campus and was about to launch its first-ever capital campaign to build a state-of-the-art facility independent of the University. It was a good cause: a valued community service that brought information, education, and entertainment to millions of viewers, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotary could make a huge contribution by spearheading the campaign! Originally a goal of $2 million was set, with $750,000 targeted to come from Rotarians. As the campaign gained momentum, it ultimately topped $3 million – with $1 million coming from Rotarians and another million contributed by their companies!

Thanks for sharing this story with the club, Neil!

UW Rowing Panel Discussion

Join us for a special panel presentation about the history of UW Rowing and the epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, hosted by UW Rowing historian, Eric Cohen. Cohen was one of Daniel James Brown’s first contacts when researching his 2013 novel, “Boys in the  Boat”.

Hear from Cohen and panelists:

  • Kirk Knapp, owner of Conny, the 1936 coaches’ boat
  • Melanie Barstow, ASUW Shell House tour founder
  • John Tytus, president of Pocock Racing Shells
  • Yaz Farooq, Olympian and current UW Women’s Rowing Head Coach

The level of rowing experience and inside knowledge of the “Boys in the Boat” story and movie is unsurpassed with this group. It is the first time all of them will be together for a presentation and will make for a highly entertaining and fascinating inside look at this story.
