To say that the economy of the US, the Pacific Northwest, and the Greater Seattle area are at an uncertain point of time is an understatement. While pundits and talking heads will say that the stock market is booming or that the trade war is being won with tariffs, the reality is more complicated than a few talking points on TV or short impulsive posts on social media. “Where we are right now is this deep sense of uncertainty, point blank, right?” said Brian Surratt, president and chief executive officer of Greater Seattle Partners. “You can’t make hiring decisions; you can’t make budget decisions. You’re just paralyzed and that is not a good place to be,” Surratt added.
On Wednesday, September 3rd, Rotarians gathered for an informative presentation from Brian Surratt as well as Chris Mefford, founder of Community Attributes Inc. Surratt and Mefford touched on topics and issues that have not only been in focus for the nation, but also the Puget Sound and Seattle areas. From tariffs to taxes; exports to imports; and past to present, both speakers touched on key economic data points for the area. “When we talk about economic impacts on anything, geography matters a lot. You can’t say what the economic impact of something is, without defining the geographic boundary that we’re talking about,” Mefford said.
Congratulations are in order for Juan Pablo Liendo, who was recently accepted to the UW Foster School of Business Evening MBA Program! He even thanked our club in his LinkedIn post announcing the news! Best of luck with your new academic endeavors!
Club member Einer Handeland was recently profiled by the Mercer Island Reporter! Our own resident “dahlia guru” continues to cultivate community through his garden at Covenant Living at the Shores, where resident volunteers assist with maintaining blooms and distributing them amongst residents.

-Thanks for the tip to check the news in Mercer Island, Einer!
Congratulations to club member Trish Bostrom! This week she was recognized as a 2025 US Tennis Association Champion of Equality during the US Women's Semifinal matches. Trish's challenge in 1971 to be allowed to try out for the UW men's tennis team paved the way for Title IX and other equity movements in sports in the decades since.

-Thanks to Linda Lowry and her original LinkedIn post about Trish's honor!
We wish long-time member Mahnaz Eshetu well as she retires after 11 years as Executive Director of the Refugee Women's Alliance. She was honored at a party this week at the Asian Art Museum, where this photo was taken.
-Thanks to Cynthia Chirot for providing the picture and update!
We would love to feature more work and life updates from our new and younger members! Let us know next time you have something to share so we can promote it in style!
It is a great way for all of us to get to know each other better! :)

Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference
Join business, government, and civic leaders from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia for two days of bold ideas and regional collaboration at the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference. This year’s program will explore shared priorities around AI, clean energy, life sciences, infrastructure, and cross-border economic growth, with panels, keynotes, and networking opportunities focused on building the Innovation Corridor of 2050. Keynote speakers include Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Abundance co-author Derek Thompson.
We would love to extend a warm invitation to your members to join us at the conference, which will take place October 28-29 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. The event brings together leaders from across Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia to collaborate on shared priorities like innovation, infrastructure, clean energy, and economic competitiveness, many of which align closely with the Rotary Club’s values and community-focused mission. To make it easier for members to attend, we’re offering a $25 discount using the code Rotary2025 at registration.
In an effort to better inform membership of the health of the club, we will start posting member additions and resignations after each month's club board meeting. August membership changes approved by the board are as follows:
New Members: Alan Bergen (reinstatement)
Resignations: Nathaniel Meyer, Grace Chen, Mike Adams, Michele Shaw, Ben Reiber, Kerry Swanson
We love to see our Rotary members promoting good works in our community and abroad! If you have a project or fundraiser that you are excited about and would like to promote to your fellow club members, please check in with our Club Director, Mary Goldie, before distributing information or invitations through our email roster. We value the privacy of our members’ contact information and can let you know the appropriate ways to reach out to folks in our club. Thank you!!
