Young Professionals Economic Panel Moderated by Dorothy Bullitt
Ready for a lively conversation on what it really takes to succeed in 2025? Join us as past president Dorothy Bullitt moderates a dynamic panel with Rotarians, Jenn Gladish, Garin Wedeking, and Stephen Morse—three young professionals with very different backstories and perspectives. They’ll swap honest stories about paying for college, buying a home, juggling childcare, and planning for the future—all while living in an economy that looks nothing like it did a generation ago.
Get set for some candid talk, friendly banter, and maybe even a little debate as we tap into what’s changed—and what hasn’t—for those just starting out today. Whether you’re nostalgic for the interest rates of the ’70s or curious about what retirement means for Millennials, you won’t want to miss this chance to hear—and join—the conversation. Tune in, bring your questions, and let’s bridge the gap together!
The day’s main program at the Rainier Club was a high profile “three-fer” with Mayor Bruce Harrell, his director of economic development, Markham McIntyre, and Downtown Seattle Association president & CEO, Jon Scholes offering their perspectives about downtown revitalization.
The mayor emphasized public safety and the challenges of ‘righting the ship’ following COVID. “We are getting about 10 applications for the police department every day, adding 150 new officers and a new chief,” he said. “Making downtown safe is central to increasing the number of people who live downtown, along with tax incentives for small business development. We are positioning the city for greatness with community building, faith and hard work.”
As the city’s economic development director, Markham McIntyre, provided graphic evidence of progress and how the mayor’s Downtown Activation Plan aims to get more people downtown. He described how the city is dealing with addiction, recovery and mental health through collaboration and bold goals to revitalize downtown. “Increasing downtown bike patrols, public space activations, better lighting are among the steps the city in partnership with downtown businesses are taking to make sure it is safe,” he said.
“We’ve avoided the doom look and on our way to the bloom look,” quipped DSA president, Jon Scholes as he reported on downtown’s upward swing -- visitors and hotel over nights at pre-covid levels and more people living downtown in109,000 units with another twenty-five units under construction.
If you've been waiting for your opportunity to engage in sport with your fellow members, now is the time as sign ups are open for Hunger Strike 2025! This annual fundraiser pits Rotary District 5030 teams against each other, all in the good spirit of service as teams are raising funds for our perennial district service partner, Harvest Against Hunger.
Fundraising kicks off on October 1, but we'd like to have teams formed before then! If you wanna figure out if you still throw straight gutter balls, email mary@seattlerotary.org to participate!

Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference
Join business, government, and civic leaders from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia for two days of bold ideas and regional collaboration at the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference. This year’s program will explore shared priorities around AI, clean energy, life sciences, infrastructure, and cross-border economic growth, with panels, keynotes, and networking opportunities focused on building the Innovation Corridor of 2050. Keynote speakers include Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Abundance co-author Derek Thompson.
We would love to extend a warm invitation to your members to join us at the conference, which will take place October 28-29 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. The event brings together leaders from across Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia to collaborate on shared priorities like innovation, infrastructure, clean energy, and economic competitiveness, many of which align closely with the Rotary Club’s values and community-focused mission. To make it easier for members to attend, we’re offering a $25 discount using the code Rotary2025 at registration.
In an effort to better inform membership of the health of the club, we will start posting member additions and resignations after each month's club board meeting. August membership changes approved by the board are as follows:
New Members: Alan Bergen (reinstatement)
Resignations: Nathaniel Meyer, Grace Chen, Mike Adams, Michele Shaw, Ben Reiber, Kerry Swanson
We love to see our Rotary members promoting good works in our community and abroad! If you have a project or fundraiser that you are excited about and would like to promote to your fellow club members, please check in with our Club Director, Mary Goldie, before distributing information or invitations through our email roster. We value the privacy of our members’ contact information and can let you know the appropriate ways to reach out to folks in our club. Thank you!!
