How We Built the New Burke Museum

January 15th at Noon
Hyatt Olive 8, 1635 8th Ave

An unwavering commitment to “turning the museum inside out” led the Burke Museum to build a radically transparent and accessible new facility. Observing visitors’ response to behind-the-scenes tours sparked Executive Director, Julie K. Stein, and her team on a ten-year journey to build a new facility—one that reveals the museum’s research and collections, and connects visitors to the staff and volunteers who use them to learn, generate knowledge, be inspired, experience joy, and to heal.

The new Burke Museum features 13 visible labs and workrooms integrated among six galleries as well as play spaces for young learners and alcoves for flexible programming. These interwoven spaces and transparencies blur traditional lines to establish the Burke as a new kind of museum and a whole new way to experience our world.  Julie Stein will give an overview of the Burke Museum’s history and talk about the challenges, vision, project milestones, and realization of opening the new facility.

TOTEM REPORT

2020 Market Outlook

Jack Ablin of Cresset Capital, who has three decades of money management experience and is the author of Reading Minds and Markets: Minimizing Risk and Maximizing Returns in a Volatile Global Marketplace, was back at our podium for the third time to present his economic forecast for the year.  “It was an honor to be invited back” he said and mentioned that he was going to reframe the normal economic forecast and focus his talk on “goals-based investing.”

The reason to reframe the discussion is due to the shift from defined benefits provided by your company to having your own personal 401k; “there is now a whole generation of Americans fending for themselves.”

REMINDER TO MEMBERS

Votes must be received by 5:00 pm Wednesday, January 15th for our $40,000 Homelessness Grant

At the January 8th Rotary luncheon, the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation presented the two finalists for our $40,000 Homelessness Grant to be awarded later this month. Our goal is to help address the chronically homeless in Seattle, including those affected by mental illness or drug addiction.  We received 10 great proposals and the grants committee narrowed it down to two finalists.

An email was sent to all members on January 8th with a Survey Monkey link so you can vote for your choice.  If you did not receive this email/link, please contact Mariah at Mariah@SeattleRotary.org

Now Is a Great Time to Join Seattle 4 Rotary!

Now through Valentine's Day, the club is offering a Sweetheart of a Deal. Prospective members can join Seattle 4 Rotary for an initiation fee of just $100. That's a savings of $350 for an individual member!

For more information about membership, follow the link below or email Caroline at Caroline@SeattleRotary.org.

Share Rotary!

Do you know someone who you think would be a great addition to our club?  Sharing Rotary is easy and prospective members receive a complimentary lunch for their first visit! Here’s what to do:

Step 1  Invite someone to a lunch meeting and decide on a date.  You can find a list of our future speakers on our website at:

Step 2  Email Caroline at Caroline@SeattleRotary.org and let her know your selected date, name of your guest, their company or organization, and their email.  The office will create a name badge for your guest and a packet of information about membership that they can collect at check-in.

Step 3  Meet your guest at the meeting and enjoy the program.  If you are late or can’t make the meeting, don’t worry!  Someone from our membership team will host your guest and take good care of them.

Step 4  After the meeting, we will follow up with your guest and invite them to future meetings.  We also encourage you to connect with them to answer questions and offer to act as their sponsor.

Our members are our greatest asset.  We appreciate your help in Sharing Rotary and keeping our club strong and vibrant!

If You Haven't Made Your Annual Gifts to Rotary, Please Consider Making Your Gifts Today

As Rotarians, we are leaders connecting for extraordinary good –both in our community and around the world.  Together we are eradicating polio and malaria, bringing fresh water to rural villages worldwide to stop the spread of disease, and helping our neighbors in need with housing, healthy foods, and educational opportunities.

Once a year we ask you to fulfill your membership obligations and take action by making two gifts that will transform our world.  One is to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (SRSF).  The other is to The Rotary Foundation (TRF).  Thank you for taking action now to help our club have a powerful and positive impact on our world.
