“It’s not going to go away. It is going to get worse — but we can mitigate it. Fifty or 100 years from now, our children and grandchildren will live with the decisions we make today.” — Dave Spicer
Rotarians are known for tackling big challenges — from clean water and disease eradication to literacy and peacebuilding. Next week’s speaker believes environmental sustainability belongs on that list too.
Our featured speaker is Dave Spicer, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Committee for Rotary District 5030, which serves roughly 50 Rotary clubs throughout the Seattle metro region. A Rotarian for more than 40 years, Dave has participated in 57 water projects and humanitarian aid trips around the world, witnessing firsthand how environmental conditions affect communities, health and economic stability.
Professionally, Dave is a semi-retired attorney whose career has also included extensive nonprofit leadership and community service. He has worked with organizations supporting rural farmers, low-income families and underserved entrepreneurs, and currently serves on the board of Ventures, the Seattle nonprofit that helps underrepresented small-business owners access training, coaching and capital.
In a recent Rotary presentation, Dave spoke candidly about the realities of climate change while emphasizing practical solutions, innovation and the importance of community leadership. He will discuss how these issues are already affecting Washington state — from droughts in Eastern Washington to flooding in Western Washington — and why Rotary can play an important role in addressing the challenges ahead.
This promises to be a timely, thoughtful and highly-relevant program. You won’t want to miss it.
We love shining a spotlight on our members and highlighting their work beyond our club walls. Many of our members are community leaders as well, including Beth Knox of the Seattle Sports Commission. Past President Knox is a familiar face in downtown and sports circles.

Allison Arnold is a Managing Partner of Opalene Climate Capital that was launched by non-profit by the name of VertueLab.
Below is a summary of her remarks.
A year as a Rotary exchange student in Belgium was one of the most formative experiences of my life. It took me from Oregon into a completely different culture and taught me the value of global understanding and local community. My French may have faded over the years, but my respect for Rotary International has only grown stronger. Rotary’s ability to create meaningful change both globally and locally reflects exactly what healthy communities require: collaboration, vision, and service.
Today, I want to talk about another essential element of healthy communities: protecting and stewarding our natural environment. Building a world where both people and nature can thrive has become the central focus of my professional life.
I serve as managing partner of Opalene Climate Capital, an impact-oriented venture fund launched by VertueLab, a Pacific Northwest nonprofit that has supported early-stage climate technology companies since 2007. VertueLab works to accelerate climate solutions by helping entrepreneurs access resources, supporting innovation, and partnering with underserved communities to create a just transition to a low-carbon economy. Our new fund invests in promising Washington climate-tech companies that can generate environmental, social, and economic impact alongside financial returns.
Climate change is no longer a distant issue. Washington residents are already experiencing its effects through changing weather patterns, wildfire smoke, drought concerns, and stress on ecosystems. Although enormous progress has been made over the last 30 years in renewable energy and electrification, our economy and supply chains remain deeply dependent on fossil fuels. Global emissions have continued to rise.
Due to health issues, Howard Behar is no longer able to join us as our main speaker for the June 17 meeting. Please note our new speaker will be LueRachelle Brim-Atkins. We apologize for this.

The mission of the Local Service Committee is two-fold: to coordinate hands-on service activities for club members, and to accept and process grant applications for local service projects and forward those applications to Seattle Rotary Service Foundation for final evaluation and award.
Serves to fulfill Rotary's mission of "advancing international understanding, goodwill, and peace." The committee selects projects that positively impact the health, education, and welfare of less advantaged people in other countries, with a particular emphasis on youth. Actively works with clubs in our District and abroad to leverage — via matching grants — the amount of money available for a project. Members get involved through direct knowledge of the project or by volunteering. Prior focuses have included malaria projects in Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda; microcredit and water projects in India; de-mining projects in Vietnam and Lebanon; AIDS orphan support in South Africa and Ethiopia; education/literacy projects in Nepal, Chile, and Hungary; and more than a decade of wide-ranging projects in Russia.
