Several past presidents met for lunch this week. Three decades of club leadership represented! From left to right: Ralph Munro (2002-2003), Sten Crissey (2010-2011), Neil McReynolds (1991-1992), Cathy Gibson (2016-2017), and Jimmy Collins (2021-2022). We are #rotarystrong!
When Steve Hobbs was appointed Secretary of State in 2021, he never dreamed he would be threatened or need a security clearance. “Elections are a big deal now”, he said, “as the election of 2022 changed everything”. Where the Secretary of State’s Office once simply supported County Auditors, promoted voter registration and voting; the office now battles misinformation and disinformation campaigns that “pepper our population using social”.
The Secretary of State’s Office combats misinformation with a national program called the “Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC)” as a valuable multistate partnership. ERIC collaborates with elections officials across the country, including Washington State, to keep voter rolls up-to-date and accurate.
Although accused of violating personal privacy by some, Secretary Hobbs has employed an artificial intelligence (AI) program to track election and voter misinformation and disinformation on social media. The AI system identifies harmful narratives so the Secretary of State can counter false information in real time.
“In addition to dealing with people in the U.S. that use disinformation, cybersecurity experts say overseas actors like Russia and China are constantly threatening data and they don’t’ care if you are a Republican or a Democrat, they just want to destroy us,” he said.

Elwha River Exploration Day!
Walk in the footsteps of NatureBridge students as you explore Elwha River restoration and its history with NatureBridge. We’ll utilize hands-on field science practices to help you understand biodiversity and ecological health, and how the ecosystem is changing post-dam removal.
You will start the day at our Olympic campus with a warm beverage and light snacks, including the world's best banana bread. You’ll have time to meet your fellow day adventurers while packing your lunchtime sandwich as we introduce NatureBridge and the Elwha River. Then we head out into the field to research sites on the Elwha where we will learn about the Elwha River, the impact of the dam in our local community and around the world! Please bring your own water, wear comfortable walking shoes and layers for the weather. The program will conclude on the Elwha River.
Registration is $10 and space is limited!
We hope you’ll join us for this fun and inspirational day!
We love to see our Rotary members promoting good works in our community and abroad! If you have a project or fundraiser that you are excited about and would like to promote to your fellow club members, please check in with our Club Director, Mary Goldie, before distributing information or invitations through our email roster.
