Markham McIntyre (Director of the Seattle Office of Economic Development) and Jon Scholes (President & CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, club member)
Worker foot traffic continues to climb downtown. The average daily number of employees reached a post-pandemic high with more than 154,000 daily worker visits in July, the highest number since February 2020. This marks the second consecutive month reaching 66% of the volume comparable to 2019 levels.
Join Jon Scholes and Markham McIntyre as they examine where we were a few years ago, where we are now and the progress that’s been made, and where we go from here when it comes to downtown recovery and public safety.
I’m happy to share that our Back-to-School card initiative, which I had the joy of initiating with the support of our Local Service Committee, President Jan, VP for Local Services Jevon, club director Mary, and Jared Grose from the Rotary Boys & Girls Club, turned out to be a real success. Together, our Rotarians prepared, and I delivered 96 handwritten cards for the children at the Rotary Boys & Girls Club.
The Club’s educator, Tim, was wonderfully cooperative, and the children’s reactions were priceless. Each of the three age groups created colorful thank-you posters, signed with their names and decorated with drawings. For some of these kids, this may have been the very first personal card they’ve ever received—a small gesture that can carry a big impact.
It is heartwarming to see how such a simple tradition can encourage children and bring smiles to their faces. I hope we can keep this momentum going and explore new ways to connect with them—perhaps with cards and little surprise gifts for Thanksgiving and the holidays ahead.

We are very fortunate to have extensive club archives dating to the early days of our club. There are some Rotary traditions we hold onto dearly, but I must say I'm kind of glad celebrating National Canned Salmon Day isn't one of them! I bet that was a “most unusual” meeting!
-March 8, 1916 bulletin, seven years after our club was founded.
Around 30 members and guests gathered for our first evening event of the 25/26 Rotary year on Wednesday at FareStart. Members enjoyed refreshments in the private dining room, socialized, and put their organizational history of FareStart to the test! FareStart is a nonprofit that provides restaurant industry job training for individuals facing disadvantages and homelessness.
FareStart received a 2011 James Beard "Humanitarian of the Year" award and has expanded its scope in recent years to add a café and barista training services for vulnerable youth at Echo Glen, a juvenile detention facility.

Mark your calendars! Our annual Big Apple Glean is Saturday, October 11 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference
Join business, government, and civic leaders from Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia for two days of bold ideas and regional collaboration at the Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference. This year’s program will explore shared priorities around AI, clean energy, life sciences, infrastructure, and cross-border economic growth, with panels, keynotes, and networking opportunities focused on building the Innovation Corridor of 2050. Keynote speakers include Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Abundance co-author Derek Thompson.
We would love to extend a warm invitation to your members to join us at the conference, which will take place October 28-29 at the Sheraton Grand Seattle. The event brings together leaders from across Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia to collaborate on shared priorities like innovation, infrastructure, clean energy, and economic competitiveness, many of which align closely with the Rotary Club’s values and community-focused mission. To make it easier for members to attend, we’re offering a $25 discount using the code Rotary2025 at registration.
In an effort to better inform membership of the health of the club, we will start posting member additions and resignations after each month's club board meeting. August membership changes approved by the board are as follows:
New Members: Alan Bergen (reinstatement)
Resignations: Nathaniel Meyer, Grace Chen, Mike Adams, Michele Shaw, Ben Reiber, Kerry Swanson
We love to see our Rotary members promoting good works in our community and abroad! If you have a project or fundraiser that you are excited about and would like to promote to your fellow club members, please check in with our Club Director, Mary Goldie, before distributing information or invitations through our email roster. We value the privacy of our members’ contact information and can let you know the appropriate ways to reach out to folks in our club. Thank you!!
