A Message from Our District Peacebuilder Chair and Seattle 4 Rotary Member Jessica Bhiuyan
Fellow District 5030 Rotarians,
I’m honored to serve as your Peacebuilder Chair, perhaps even now more than ever. I believe, especially at this moment, that peacebuilding work is vital. I don’t take my responsibilities to serve, support, and assist our district and each of your clubs lightly, instead feeling more passionate and committed than ever. I hope you will join me.
In light of the recent brutal and tragic murder of George Floyd, as well as Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and too many Black Lives before them, I want to assure you that as District 5030 Rotarians, we will do the difficult, and much needed work to create a more just, open, and peaceful world for all. A great deal of this work must revolve around race relations, diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am proud to say you will see this outlined as a priority for our coming Rotary year.
2020-2021 District Peacebuilding Goals:
- District Peace Book Club: Reading, Gathering, and Discussing
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Growing District Peacebuilder Committee
- Establishing new peacebuilder committees in three district clubs

District 5030 Peacebuilding Facebook Group:
If you haven’t already, please join (and encourage your fellow Rotarians too) our District Peacebuilding Facebook Group.
Click here to join the Facebook group. Everyone can share announcements, ideas, resources, and dialogue on all things Rotary Peacebuilding throughout our district.
Book Club:
I would like to offer our first district wide Peace Book Club offering immediately. The idea was to read, gather, and discuss two books a year (fall and spring). With so much going on and the enthusiasm received, I would like to expedite this for all district Rotarians and peace clubs, with a selection that will reflect listening, learning, and dialoguing around race relations.
If you would like to participate in this early summer book club program, please send me an email at
rotarypeace5030@gmail.com.
Anti-Racism Resources:
Many Rotarians are diving into the difficult, yet vital work surrounding racism and Black Lives Matter. Most of us, inside and outside of Rotary, are looking for resources to help support our efforts. I would like to offer a few:
Podcast: Unlocking Us, Brené Brown; Episode: Brené with Ibram X. Kendi on How to Be an Antiracist
Article and Resources: 75 Things White People Can Do for Racial Justice
As your PeaceBuilder Chair, as well as a social justice advocate, Executive Director of the non-profit
World Without Hate, and a current member of Seattle’s Human Rights Commission, I am heavily involved in race relations and DEI work. I am also a white individual who has and continues to learn about and understand my own racism, white fragility, and transition to white ally and accomplice for Black Lives and our marginalized community members. I am here to learn with you, as well as offer my support, time, and experiences as we all journey through this revolution. I can be reached at
rotarypeace5030@gmail.com at any time.
In Peace,
Jessica C. Bhuiyan
