Dr. James Joki: NASA's Apollo Program
September 11th at Noon
The Renaissance Hotel, 515 Madison Street Courtyard Ballroom, B Level
Fifty years ago, James Joki, a 26 year-old Boeing engineer, was in Mission Control for Apollo 11’s moon landing. Serving as an extravehicular mobility unit flight controller, Joki helped develop, test and modify the spacesuits, backpacks, visors, gloves and oxygen system that Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong would rely on for life support during their walk on the moon. His role was critical from the time Aldrin and Armstrong donned their suits and opened the door of the lunar module, to the moment they returned safely to the spacecraft and shut the door. Join us in welcoming Dr. James Joki, a graduate of Ballard High School and the University of Washington, as he shares his experiences from his time with NASA and the Apollo space program.
University of Washington professor, David Domke, is giving up his 21-year tenured job to “live out his truth” by dedicating his next chapter to foster, support, and amplify a democracy that is just and inclusive. In other words, he is promoting voting rights across the U.S. through an organization called Common Purpose (www.cpnow.org) that aims to provide civic fieldwork by investing in the next generation of leaders to register and mobilize voters, build community, develop diverse leaders, and build partnerships with organizations like Rotary.
“The U.S. is in a perilous place not much different than the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941,” he said. “A moment of terror in our society where it is harder to vote now than when the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was enacted by the Congress as the country’s most important piece of legislation ever.”
When Raymond and I met last week for our interview, I had forgotten to do my cursory research to at least find a picture of him so I wouldn’t be pathetically eyeing everyone in the coffee shop. Fortunately, he did do his research and was eyeing me, so the field quickly narrowed.I shouldn’t have worried. It’s hard to miss Raymond. From his sartorial excellence to his eminent grace and inviting smile, I figured if he wasn’t the president of Cornish College of the Arts, he should be.
Seattle City Rotaract is a club of young professionals aged 21-30 sponsored by Seattle #4 Rotary that focuses on hands-on service in the local community and leadership development. Do you have any recent college grads, interns, or emerging professionals in your life that might be interested? Encourage them to check out the Rotaract Club at seattecityrotaract.org.
Engaging with Rotaract Club members is a great way for current Rotary members to meet and get to know the Rotarians of tomorrow as well. All Rotaract Club meetings and events are open for Rotarians to attend – both the young and young at heart! Recently, several Seattle #4 members enjoyed a rooftop barbeque at Seattle City’s Kickoff Party hosted by Virginia McKenzie. Other upcoming events include:
