Seattle Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner
The upcoming school year will be the first for new Seattle Schools Superintendent Ben Shuldiner. Leading a school system with known budget shortfalls and inefficiencies, Shuldiner faces many issues related to the education, safety, and security of students. Join us as we hear about Shuldiner's K-12 priorities for the year and what he envisions for Seattle schools.
We will be writing encouraging back to school notes again this year, so please bring a pen if attending the meeting next week!
As we enter the busy fall season, we hope you take some time to sign up to be a greeter for an upcoming club lunch meeting. Member Joanne Miller is assisting us this year, and we have several different specific roles and needs!
Seattle 4’s ISC has set aside $5,000 this year for district matching funds in hopes of partnering with other District 5030 clubs on international projects being submitted for District Grants. If you know of any interested clubs, we ask that you spread the word!
Clubs may request up to$2,500 per project, with the goal of our club supporting at least two projects.
Interested clubs should email the same application they are submitting to the District to helary.yakub@outlook.comby Monday, August 24 at 5:00 PM. No additional Seattle 4 application is required.
Funding decisions are expected to be made before the end of September. If you have any questions, please reach out to Helary Rakete-Yakub at Helary.yakub@outlook.com.
Reminder: New Badge Barcodes and Scanning
As we look to leverage ClubRunner for better data tracking, we've been adding bar codes to member badges and scanning in attendees at lunch meetings.
If you have not come to lunch since we started this process, please make sure to go to the registration desk to get your bar code sticker next meeting you attend.
All members attending lunch will need to be scanned in upon entry moving forward.
5th Avenue Theatre Discount Offer
A 25% discount is available for single tickets to our self-produced shows: A Chorus Line, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Neverland. Rotarians can currently access tickets to all of these shows - including Alice in Neverland through the dedicated webpage below, ahead of the public on-sale:
A 20% discount will also be available for our touring productions: Operation Mincemeat and Maybe Happy Ending. We anticipate receiving a separate STG promotional code that can be used through Ticketmaster, and I’ll share those details as soon as they’re confirmed.
Please note that these discounts apply only to single tickets. Subscription packages are already discounted and include additional benefits, so no further discounts can be applied.
For groups of 10 or more, guests can save even more by completing a single group transaction through Guest Services. This reduces the per-ticket service fee from $10 to $2, and the 25% discount can still be applied. To qualify, all tickets must be purchased together in one transaction rather than paid for individually.
Our YRLS are on the ball…baseball that is! Friday night our YRL group met up before the Mariners game to Zoom in with Victor Tom, developer of the first practical ball pitch tracking system for Major League Baseball. After the presentation, members joined other district Rotarians for the Mariners game (an unfortunate loss!).

Ready, Set, School Volunteer Opportunities Through Alliance for Education
There are three upcoming opportunities to volunteer in preparation for the upcoming school year for Seattle students:
Friday, August 21 from 12:30 to 3:30 PM: Assist with classroom setup and supply sorting at Lowell Elementary.
Saturday, August 29 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM: Assist with gardening and landscaping at Nathan Hale High School.
Saturday, August 29 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM: Assist with new school year preparations at Dearborn Park Elementary School.

Lake Union Rotary Happy Hour for Good Featuring Rotary Club of Seattle's David Bobanick on Paella and Sue Nixon with Music!
Organized by the Lake Union Rotary Club, Happy Hour 4 Good is a lively event that will feature David Bobanick's renowned classic paella. Dainis Svarcs, owner of Abbe Vineyard Winery, will be pouring his signature wines. Beer and non-alcoholic beverages provided by Talking Rain Beverage Company will also be available. Sue Nixon and her jazz quartet will entertain us for the evening. A voice described as soulful and rich, she and her quartet traverse between classic jazz, blues, Latin, and pop.
Will you be the lucky raffle winner of an authentic winemaker dinner for six at Abbe Vineyard Winery? Just imagine enjoying a five-course dinner on the winery's terrace overlooking 4.5 acres of rolling vineyards nestled in the heart of Federal Way. Each of the five courses will be thoughtfully paired with a specific wine to enhance the flavors of both the dish and wine.
Harvest Against Hunger is honored to be the beneficiary of the net proceeds raised. This is an event you don't want to miss!
In an effort to better inform membership of the health of the club, we will start posting member additions and resignations after each month's club board meeting.
We love to see our Rotary members promoting good works in our community and abroad! Serves to fulfill Rotary's mission of "advancing international understanding, goodwill, and peace." The committee selects projects that positively impact the health, education, and welfare of less advantaged people in other countries, with a particular emphasis on youth. Actively works with clubs in our District and abroad to leverage — via matching grants — the amount of money available for a project. Members get involved through direct knowledge of the project or by volunteering. Prior focuses have included malaria projects in Zambia, Tanzania, and Uganda; microcredit and water projects in India; de-mining projects in Vietnam and Lebanon; AIDS orphan support in South Africa and Ethiopia; education/literacy projects in Nepal, Chile, and Hungary; and more than a decade of wide-ranging projects in Russia.

Music4Life is a non-profit and project of Rotary District 5030 that distributes musical instruments to public school students in need.
We welcome any gently used musical instruments you wish to donate. They can be delivered directly to these local music stores that are now open: American Music in Phinney Ridge and Kennelly Keys Music in Bellevue, Lynnwood, and Everett.
